How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but with click here no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to check here do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite ohms.
