How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.

3. Fuel Pump
